Two police officers were wounded while trying to arrest a suspect, who was killed in the confrontation in Baltimore on Wednesday, authorities said.
Gunfire erupted at about noon in the 5900 block of Radecke Avenue, near Cedonia Avenue, about 6 miles northeast of downtown, Baltimore police said.
One of the wounded is a member of the city police force and the other is a county police officer, officials said.
“At some point the suspect was outside … shots were fired,” Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison told reporters. “Our officers were hit. The suspect was hit and was fatally wounded.”
The suspect who was killed is a former Maryland corrections officer wanted in connection with a shooting in Pennsylvania.
The wounded officers are members of task force that includes officers from local, state and federal agencies, officials said.
Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan visited one of the wounded officers at the Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center but couldn’t speak to the other wounded lawman, as he had just come out of surgery.
“We believe both officers are going to be OK,” Hogan said.
